Ablative laser removal of melanocytic nevus is an established procedure in skin therapy for esthetic and therapeutic purposes. A complete removal of nevus during these procedures is critical for the prevention of recurrence or development into other forms of skin problem. This illustration shows that an in-situ distinction of darkly pigmented skin tissue such as nevus from the surrounding normal tissue is possible during laser ablation by detecting the spectral intensity of constituent tissue element from the laser plasma.
